Mom is always so selfish. She puts my brother, me, and even the housework on the back burner. She’d fall for a guy and disappear for days, only to knock on the door laughing and say, “I’m out of a job,” and says, “He wants to have sex with you! Apparently, he’ll give me money in exchange!” and brings some random old guy home. I get r**ed on a stain-covered futon, and Mom goes out to have fun with that money. She never came to parent-teacher conferences, sports festivals, or graduation ceremonies, and my brother gave up, saying, “Don’t get your hopes up”—and he actually forgot my birthday. Even to an outsider, Mom is the worst, but maybe it’s because I’m stupid, but I just can’t help but forgive her. When she hugged me tight and rubbed her cheek against mine, it made me feel like she loved me. Today is Christmas. Mom texted me, “I’ll take you somewhere nice.” She remembered our promise—I’d asked her to be with me on Christmas. The hallway smelled nice, the carpet was plush, and the hotel looked so fancy. My heart was pounding—“What on earth is going on?”—but I figured out the answer right away. The room we entered was decorated with cute ornaments, there was a delicious-looking cake, and a strange old man with a smile that was kind of creepy. “Sorry, Mom, I have a date. So, I know this is bad of me… but I’m broke. Could you help me out again?” Even though I knew it was all a lie, I wanted to believe in my mother’s love.
